PRK, or photorefractive keratectomy, is a surface laser method. After removing the corneal epithelium, the tissue beneath it is reshaped using an excimer laser. No flap is created, unlike LASIK.
PRK, LASEK and transepithelial PRK (No Touch T-PRK) are surface treatments that differ in how the epithelium is managed. It is not correct to describe PRK as a method between LASEK and No Touch.
Pain, stinging, watering and light sensitivity may occur during the first few days. The doctor removes the protective contact lens after confirming epithelial healing during an examination. Vision may take weeks to become clearer and may continue to improve over the following months. Recovery varies between individuals. Eye drops and follow-up appointments should continue according to the doctor’s recommendations.
PRK may be considered for myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism in suitable patients. Not every patient who is unsuitable for LASIK is suitable for PRK. Corneal thickness and shape, planned tissue removal, tear film and other eye diseases are assessed together.
Keratoconus is not a refractive error treated by routine prescription-correction PRK. Specialised surface treatments, CXL and other options for selected keratoconus patients require a separate corneal assessment.
Risks such as infection, corneal haze, dry eye, glare around lights at night, failure to achieve the expected correction and ectasia are discussed during the examination. At our hospital, CER-AI supports corneal risk assessment. It does not replace the doctor’s decision and does not guarantee results.
