Cataract Surgery the intraocular prosthesis placed inside the eye to provide clear distance vision is called a monofocal lens . When a monofocal lens is implanted during cataract surgery, it has one focal point and provides clear vision only at the distance for which it is set.
In general practice, the patient’s distance vision is corrected and glasses are needed for near vision after surgery. These are the standard cataract lenses that have been widely used for many years. Material quality and the surgeon’s implantation technique affect the postoperative outcome.
Implanting an unsuitable lens can cause permanent side effects. Persistent problems may include poor visual quality, glare, night-time dazzling and the need for high-prescription glasses after surgery. Our doctors will provide the most appropriate information following your examination.
In particular, monofocal lens patients may see near objects only with +2.5 reading glasses. These lenses are preferred for cataract patients over 40–45.
As cataracts progress, age-related vision loss of varying severity may occur, generally after age 60. Even if you are unsure whether it results from a cataract you may still be suitable for lens replacement surgery. This operation replaces your natural lens with an artificial one, and the decision requires particular care.
Implanting an unsuitable lens can cause permanent side effects, including poor visual quality, glare and night-time dazzling. Patients with myopia who do not have a cataract must be especially careful when deciding whether to undergo lens replacement. It is a medical fact that patients with hyperopia receiving trifocal or bifocal lenses during lens replacement tend to be more satisfied with treatment. Our doctors will provide the most appropriate information following your examination.
With advances in technology, cataract surgery uses PHACO technology. Our eye surgeons’ extensive experience and use of new technologies allow patients to undergo surgery confidently. Our experienced specialist eye surgeons provide clear information to help you make the right decision. Cataract surgery, or lens replacement, is a very safe, painless, suture-free procedure performed under topical anaesthetic drops. It takes 10–15 minutes and does not require a hospital stay. It is performed at our hospital. However, in advanced or delayed cases, the sutured ECCE method may still be used, making timely intervention important.
There are many lens manufacturers to choose from. At our hospital, we research the characteristics of all manufacturers and select the most appropriate option for our patients.
The selected lens should be considered a lifelong implant. Suitability of the eye is the primary consideration, followed by the patient’s age, lifestyle, other conditions, expectations and profession. As patients often ask, the lens is implanted inside the eye: it cannot be taken in and out, touched or adjusted externally. Replacement is inappropriate unless necessary and is a risky procedure. It is therefore important to identify the most suitable lens through measurements and make the right choice initially.
Our experienced specialist doctors will select the most appropriate lens for your eye.
