Tear fluid is carried into the nasal cavity through the tear ducts. A blocked tear duct, in particular, occurs when the drainage passages through the nose cannot properly drain tear fluid from your eyes. When your tear duct becomes blocked, your eyes may be itchy, irritated or watery. Sometimes babies are born with blocked tear ducts and may not require treatment because the ducts open on their own. In adults, a blocked tear duct may resolve on its own or require surgery. With treatment, most people experience complete relief from their symptoms.

Each eyelid has a small opening that drains the tears produced by your eyes. Blinking first directs tears towards these openings. From there, the tears drain into a small tube and then into the tear sac. The tear sac leads into the tear duct, which passes around the bony structures surrounding your nose and drains into the nasal cavity.
The original medical term used in the literature is dacryocystorhinostomy . This operation creates a new pathway for tears to flow between your eyes and nose. You may need this surgery if your tear duct is blocked. The procedure can be performed externally through an incision in the skin or endoscopically through the nose without a skin incision. Both methods are equally successful.
