Trifocal intraocular lenses are three-focus prosthetic lenses implanted through a minimally invasive incision at the edge of the cornea (approximately 2.2–2.6 mm ), providing clearer distance, near and intermediate vision. Commonly known as smart lenses, they are implanted using the same operation as standard cataract surgery.
Trifocal lens patients can see clearly at near, intermediate and far distances without glasses. Trifocal lenses may be preferred for patients with cataracts or those without cataracts who do not want glasses but whose prescriptions are unsuitable for excimer laser surgery. They can also be used in patients over 40 who have developed presbyopia, or near-vision difficulty, in addition to distance-vision problems.
Trifocal or three-focus lenses provide clear vision at every distance without glasses, and the prescription does not progress again. Cataracts also do not recur later in life.
The greatest advantage of three-focus lenses is intermediate vision. They offer advantages when using a computer, seeing a kitchen worktop clearly, watching television at the desired distance, or viewing the dashboard and front of a car while driving.
A detailed examination and investigations are essential before treatment. Not everyone wanting a trifocal lens is suitable.
In particular, cataract progression may cause age-related vision loss of varying severity, generally after age 60. Even if you are unsure whether it results from a cataract you may still be suitable for lens replacement surgery. This operation replaces your natural lens with an artificial one and requires a careful decision.
Implanting an unsuitable lens can cause permanent side effects. Implanting an unsuitable lens can cause permanent side effects. Persistent problems may include poor visual quality, glare, night-time dazzling and the need to wear glasses again after surgery. Our doctors will provide the most appropriate information after examination. Patients with myopia who do not have a cataract must be especially careful when deciding whether to undergo lens replacement. It is a medical fact that patients with hyperopia receiving monofocal, Trifocal or bifocal lenses tend to be more satisfied with treatment. Our doctors will provide the most appropriate information following your examination.
With advances in technology, cataract surgery uses PHACO technology. Our eye surgeons’ extensive experience and use of new technologies allow patients to undergo surgery confidently. Our experienced specialist surgeons provide clear information to help you make the right decision. Cataract surgery, or lens replacement, is a very safe, painless, suture-free procedure performed under topical anaesthetic drops. It takes 10–15 minutes, requires no hospital stay and is performed at our clinic.
There are many lens manufacturers to choose from. At our hospital, we research their characteristics and select the most appropriate options for our patients.
The chosen lens should be considered a lifelong implant. Suitability of the eye is the primary consideration, followed by the patient’s age, lifestyle, other conditions, expectations and profession. As patients often ask, lenses are implanted inside the eye: they cannot be taken in and out, touched or adjusted externally. Replacement is inappropriate unless necessary and is a risky procedure. The important point is therefore to identify the most suitable lens through measurements and make the right decision at the outset.
Our experienced specialist surgeons identify suitable lenses, offer alternatives and obtain the selected lens from the manufacturer for each patient. Although deciding whom to trust may seem difficult, you can be confident that our experienced surgeons will help make the right choice of lens for your eye.
