What are emergency eye care services?

Our hospital has an emergency healthcare unit organised to provide prompt, effective intervention for sudden eye problems. The unit aims to stabilise patients and arrange appropriate referrals by providing initial medical care in situations requiring specialised eye health assessment.

What are eye emergencies?

The following are among the main conditions requiring emergency eye care:

  • Sudden loss of vision
  • Chemical exposure or eye burns
  • Bleeding inside the eye
  • Trauma to the eyeball or a foreign object entering the eye
  • Severe eye pain accompanied by headache or nausea
  • Sudden double vision
  • Severe swelling, redness and signs of infection around the eye

How the Emergency Unit Works

Patients attending with eye emergencies are first rapidly assessed by our experienced healthcare staff. Necessary medical care is provided according to the patient’s condition, the severity of their symptoms and systemic risk.

Eye emergencies can lead to permanent vision loss or systemic complications if not treated promptly. Our emergency healthcare unit therefore provides early diagnosis, rapid intervention and appropriate referral.

Our hospital has an emergency unit to provide initial care for patients presenting urgently. For emergencies unrelated to the eye, initial care aims to stabilise the patient and arrange further assessment. Depending on the patient’s medical condition and needs, the 112 Command and Control Centre is contacted to arrange ambulance transfer for further investigation and treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Is sudden vision loss an emergency?

Yes. Sudden vision loss can indicate serious conditions such as retinal detachment, optic nerve disease or intraocular vascular occlusion. Immediate assessment by an emergency ophthalmology service is necessary.

2. What should I do if a foreign object enters my eye?

If a foreign object enters the eye, do not rub the eye or attempt to remove the object. Gently rinse the eye with clean water and attend a healthcare facility for an emergency eye examination.

3. What should I do if a chemical gets into my eye?

After chemical exposure, rinse the eye with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes and immediately attend the nearest emergency department. Early intervention significantly reduces the risk of permanent damage.

4. What can severe eye pain indicate?

Sudden, intense eye pain may indicate an acute glaucoma attack, iridocyclitis, a corneal ulcer or a sudden rise in intraocular pressure. This type of pain requires emergency assessment.

5. Which symptoms after eye trauma are dangerous?

Reduced vision, restricted eye movement, redness, double vision or a change in the shape of the eyeball after trauma require urgent intervention.

6. What do flashes and floaters mean?

Sudden flashes of light and floating black spots may indicate retinal emergencies, such as a retinal tear or detachment. Examination of the back of the eye is essential.
